Step One: Prep the Silver
To make a silver ring, you first need some silver. Use a chisel and a mallet to cut a piece of silver from a whole piece of silver bar. After cutting the silver piece, you then use a hammer to knock off the larger part. When you are done, you have a piece of metal that will become a ring.
Step Two: Melt Your Metal
Take the silver and some other metals (which are added to the silver to ensure that the final ring is not too soft for daily wear) and start melting the silver. In order to expel gases and oxides as the metal heats, the goldsmith will add borax powder at intervals. Once the metal is heated to a liquid, it is poured into the mold.
Step Three: Rolling & Annealing
After the metal has cooled and has been cut into usable shapes, it is time for rolling and annealing. The metal is placed in a rolling mill, which helps to stretch the silver. After several rolling passes, the metal is annealed.
Step Four: Cutting Down to Size
Once the metal is stretched, we cut it again. This time, however, we cut it down to the appropriate size.
Step Five: More Shaping & Annealing
Once the ring is cut, it is rolled and stretched again to change the ring's contours. The process is the same as the first time: the ring is rolled several times and then annealed to help soften and stretch the metal without damaging it.
Step Six: Final Shaping
Once the outline and length of the ring are finalized and approved by our experts, we begin shaping the metal into the shape of the ring. By repeatedly pressing the metal into a round shape, the originally straight piece of silver is transformed into a round shape. Once the shaping is complete, it is time to solder it.
Step Seven: Soldering Ring
Soldering is the process of joining two ends of metal together using an additional piece of metal. In this process, the silver ring is first dipped into a solution to prevent the metal from oxidizing. After heating the ring, a few drops of flux solution are applied to ensure that the solder will hold firmly.
Step Eight: Polishing & More Polishing
Once the ring is joined together, the next step is to polish up the rough metal to shine beautifully. A variety of polishing rings are used to buff up the ring.
Step Nine: Cleaning & Steaming
The second last step is to clean off any residual polishing paste. This process involves letting the ring sit in an ultrasonic bath and then running it under a steaming wand.
Maintenance of silver rings
Avoid Humidity and Sulphides in the Air
Humid environments and sulphides in the air are adversaries to 925 sterling silver, causing silver items to discolour and tarnish. Common sulphides include sulphur dioxide and sulphur trioxide, found in bleach, hot springs, exhaust from burning coal, and acid rain. When not wearing your silver ring, we suggest storing it in a sealed bag to isolate it from air and moisture.
Steer Clear of Chemicals
925 sterling silver is sensitive to certain chemicals. Therefore, in addition to the sulphides mentioned above, it's also essential to avoid contact with cosmetics, perfumes, bleach, and cleaning agents. In daily life, it is recommended to wear your silver ring after applying makeup and perfume to minimise chemical damage to the jewelry.
Avoid Prolonged Sun Exposure
While 925 sterling silver exhibits anti-oxidizing properties, prolonged exposure to sunlight may still cause surface discolouration. Therefore, when not wearing your ring, store it in a cool place, avoiding direct sunlight.
Regular Cleaning
While it's impossible to completely prevent silver ring from oxidising and discolouring, regular cleaning can effectively remove oxidants from the surface of 925 sterling silver, maintaining its natural lustre and restoring its original shine. Common methods include using silver polishing cloths, silver polish cream, and silver cleaner which utilises redox reactions.
