What is moissanite?

Name origin：Moissanite is named after the French chemist Henri Moissan, who discovered natural silicon carbide in 1893.

Crystal system：It belongs to the hexagonal crystal system.

Chemical composition：The main component is silicon carbide (SiC), in which carbon atoms and silicon atoms are arranged in a specific crystal structure.

Physical Properties

Hardness：With a Mohs hardness of 9.25, it is the second hardest material after diamond, which means it is highly resistant to scratches and can maintain its luster and surface smoothness for a long time.

Optical properties

Refractive index：The refractive index of moissanite is 2.65-2.69, higher than that of diamond (2.42), making it have excellent light refraction and reflection effects.

Dispersion：The dispersion value is 0.104, much larger than that of diamond (0.044). Therefore, moissanite can produce more intense and colorful fire, showing a gorgeous and dazzling visual effect under light.

Luster：It has a metallic luster similar to diamond, giving it a bright and shiny appearance.

Color：Natural moissanite is usually colorless, green, or yellow. Synthetic moissanite can also be produced in a variety of colors through different manufacturing processes, such as colorless, near-colorless, light yellow, etc.

Density：The density of moissanite is about 3.218-3.22g/cm³, slightly lighter than diamond (3.52g/cm³).

Occurrence and Synthesis

Natural occurrence：Natural moissanite is extremely rare and is mainly found in meteorites, kimberlites, lamproites and other rocks.

Synthetic method：In order to meet the needs of the market, most of the moissanite on the market is synthetic. The common synthesis methods include the Lely process, in which high-purity silicon and carbon are combined and heated in an inert atmosphere to grow moissanite crystals.
