The activity of humans synthesizing gemstones in laboratories has a history of over 100 years, such as synthesizing diamonds, rubies, and so on. Although these products have the same chemical composition and some physical properties (such as hardness and refractive index) as natural gemstones, most of the physical properties such as growth stripes, color saturation, clarity, bichromaticity, dispersion, etc. are significantly different from natural gemstones, which can be easily distinguished by the naked eye. Therefore, these products are mainly used in the industrial field, such as synthetic diamonds widely used in various superhard grinding tools and abrasives, and synthetic sapphire used in industrial bearings, optical lenses, etc. Visually, this type of synthetic gemstone has not truly reached the gem quality of natural gemstones, simply because of its consistent composition, people habitually refer to it as synthetic gemstones.
